According to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, it’s very important.

Fed. R. Civ. P 12(b)(2) states:

What? Yes, that’s short for Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. There’s a lot of that in law. Abbreviations, I mean. And contractions…apostrophes, apostrophes as far as the eye can see. Just not now. For that matter, it turns out that there’s even controversy over little things like abbreviations and apostrophes, and entire editions of particular books have been all but destroyed by that controversy (to hear the anti-apostrophe-um, -ites tell it).
