New life in the lab? Major genetic engineering advance on the way

From Science Alert: Scientists are close to rewriting the genetic code of life

The researchers are hoping to eventually use these codons to create artificial amino acids in the bacteria. This would totally change the types of protein E. coli could create, and could have huge implications for manufacturing, and other industries.

That part about the artificial amino acids is vital, as that’s what will keep the new critters confined to the lab, as mentioned in the video.
